* INCOMING *

1. MTV V.M.A.S PREVIEW: From L.A. bureau chief Alice Dubin: MTV's big Video Music Awards are slated for Sunday at the Nokia Theater at L.A. Live, and the network has taken over the lobby of the JW Marriott Los Angeles to build its black carpet. All of the hotel's food and beverage outlets have been closed as a result (although guests can eat breakfast and lunch at WP24 by Wolfgang Puck at the Ritz-Carlton through the weekend). Celebrities will enter through the front entrance of the hotel on Sunday and move along the carpet before exiting through the back, proceeding to Nokia for the show. Reuters:

And here's a look at some of the parties on the show's heels:

* MTV's official after-party will take to SBE's Hollywood club, the Colony.
* Colin Cowie will produce an after-party on Sunday to celebrate the release of Lil Wayne’s new album, "Tha Carter IV," which hits stores the following day.
* Perez Hilton is hosting his “One Night In…” concert series (its second stop in L.A.), timed around the V.M.A.s and presented by Carrera sunglasses. It will take to the Wiltern Theatre Saturday night.
* In Touch magazine's "Icons & Idols" party is at the Sunset Tower Sunday night, with production by Toast and Bookem Danno. DJs Mom Jeans and Ms. Nix will spin.
* On Saturday, Drake will host the Mixtapedownload.com launch party at Supperclub.

2. IRENE DERAILS M.L.K. DEDICATION: From news editor Courtney Thompson: At 8:30 p.m. last night the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation announced that it was canceling Sunday's dedication ceremony, in addition to Saturday's public expo and youth symposium. The prayer service at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will be the last scheduled event to take place, on Saturday at 10 a.m. According to Harry E. Johnson, the foundation's senior president and C.E.O., the dedication will be rescheduled in September or October.

"In the words of Dr. King, 'we must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.' With that in mind, let’s remember the spirit of the Memorial– justice, democracy, hope and love," Johnson said in a release.

Andre Wells confirmed to BizBash exclusively that Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity's Friday night event is continuing as planned.

3. MEMORIAL REVIEW: Speaking of the M.L.K. monument, reviews are coming in. Edward Rothstein in The New York Times says it fails to represent the intended elements of the "I Have a Dream" speech: "[D]o these mounds of granite, which are given an almost artificial appearance with their sketchy, cartoonish contours—do they evoke anything at all like a 'mountain of despair'? And the unattractive slice supposedly pushed into the center of the memorial: is that really a 'stone of hope'? Certainly not, judging from the expression on Dr. King’s face."

4. DINING FLASH MOB: From senior editor Anna Sekula: Despite rain earlier in the day, the weather cleared up for the first Diner en Blanc, which took over the World Financial Center Plaza last night, bringing a flash mob of 1,000 guests clad in all-white attire for a pop-up picnic of sorts. The spontaneous seated affair covered the outdoor area between the Winter Garden and the North Cove Marina with dozens of square white tables, white chairs, and even white balloons.

5. HURRICANE PREPARATION: New York Mayor Bloomberg revoked permits yesterday for events taking place in low-lying areas Saturday and all those on Sunday, including the Dave Matthews Band concert on Governors Island. To keep streets clear for emergency vehicles, 300 street fairs have been canceled. The mayor also announced that the public transportation system is shutting down starting tomorrow afternoon. Other systems like Amtrak and local airports have also cancelled service.
