* INCOMING *

1. REPORT FROM P.C.M.A.: From West Coast editor Alesandra Dubin: The crowd of meeting planners was back at the San Diego Convention Center Tuesday for the Professional Convention Management Association’s annual meeting, Convening Leaders—after a late night for some who attended the conference's "Party With a Purpose" benefit at the U.S.S. Midway Museum Monday night. The association kept the energy high with a networking luncheon sponsored by the Mexico tourism board, where a crowd of mariachis greeted attendees, and colorful pinatas soared overhead. Here's a snippet of
sound bites from the day:

Lisa Block, vice president of meetings and conferences, Society for Human Resource Management: "Creating a culture where change is acceptable and change is embraced is probably the most important aspect of being successful."

Karen Kotowski, C.E.O., Convention Industry Council: “When our industry started coming under attack, we had to start going out there and talking about how meetings mean jobs and meetings drive revenue to our organizations.”

Eric Janecke, director of marketing, Hilton New Orleans Riverside: "Our industry tends to look at historical data [about the value of meetings] the way people look at their credit scores: Everyone thinks theirs is great until they go try to get a loan."

Don Neal, president, 360 Live Media: "There’s a lot of inspiration [to be found for events] in other places. I think the mega-churches have cracked the code in how you can have a 25,000-person congregation that feels very meaningful to one member."

Here’s Alesandra’s full report from Neal’s presentation about breathing new life into annual events:

2. LESSONS FROM IOWA: Ad Age's Pete Snyder on the five lessons marketers can learn from the Iowa caucus: "Social media works only if it's supported by the proper infrastructure. (That's why Obama was so successful. It wasn't social for social's sake but to drive an action.)"

3. C.E.S. COMMENCES: The International Consumer Electronics Show officially opened Tuesday following Monday night's Ryan Seacrest-hosted keynote with Microsoft C.E.O. Steven A. Ballmer, which featured a low-tech Twitter stream of sorts: Live tweets were sung by the Las Vegas Mass Choir, prompting cnet.com's Chris Matyszczyk to ask "Weird or very weird?" Here's the video:
