With the spirit of giving in the air, the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami hosted the Big Event 2008 on March 22 at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa to raise money for the organization and celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Coordinated, planned, and design by Medallion Occasion Boutique, the evening began with cocktails. Tables were set up both inside the lobby of the Legends Ballroom and out on the patio, and were draped in deep red, chocolate, and forest-green linens. While guests meandered between the four bars and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres such as chicken quesadillas or cooked shrimp in a fried plantain bowl, and Thaler Corporation provided the entertainment including guitar band Latino Fire, guitarist Roger Bustamante and DJ Iggy.An expansive silent auction was set up inside, with items including a LancĂ´me luxury gift basket, a seven-night Caribbean cruise for two, and more. In addition, eventgoers could purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win the "Big Ticket Food Network Vegas package," which included round-trip airfare for two to Las Vegas and a two-night hotel stay at Caesar's Palace.
As the cocktail hour drew to a close, the salsa beats of the Carlos Oliva Band enticed guests into the ballroom for the main event. Inside, tables were draped in fuchsia and chocolate linens and topped with a small gold pot of pink, red, orange, and purple roses.
For dinner, attendees enjoyed an appetizer of scallops, followed by rib eye steak in port wine demi sauce with potatoes, green beans, and a truffle onion tart. To round out the meal, guests could choose between a crème brûlée tart and chocolate crunch bar.
Throughout dinner, speakers shared stories about the B.B.B.S. organization. A surprising element occurred when three singers from Incognito Artists, who were dressed as waiters, startled the audience by breaking out into opera and Broadway tunes.
Upon leaving, guests received a clear box of chocolate candies and a cupcake with a medallion marking the organization's big anniversary.
