All Ages

For its annual Stellar Night gala, Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation featured a program geared toward a crowd of families and kids.

March 31, 2008
A kid- and family-heavy crowd came together on Friday evening for Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation's annual Stellar Night gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. High School Musical's Corbin Bleu assumed hosting duties for the event, which honored William and Elizabeth Shatner, as well as doctor Francine Kaufman for her work to fight childhood diabetes and obesity.

The program included musical performances by Dominic Scott Kay, a live auction, and a short video clip with mentions of all the sponsors (in lieu of a traditional sponsor book). Event director Christina Murphy used the imagery behind organization's name as design inspiration, with decor in dark hues in the ballroom, a wall full of projected stars, star-printed tablecloths, ice sculptures bearing the Starlight logo, and Swarovski napkin ornaments in star shapes.Because the event invited guests of all ages, it had interactive activities for all ages. "Going to an event where you are separated from your kids the whole time wouldn’t necessarily be that enjoyable," Murphy said. "This year, we’ve opened up a kids' lounge during the cocktail hour because we want the parents to go in there with their kids and have that experience together." The lounge included arts and crafts activities, a magician, a photo booth, and a Nintendo Wii projected onto a wall so guests could either watch or play games.

Adults could root for their favorite L.A. team in a twist on a raffle: Cheerleaders from UCLA and USC hawked tickets on behalf of their schools, which have a longstanding rivalry. UCLA won the challenge (and won on the court this weekend, too—the school defeated Xavier to advance to the Final Four).

Moving guests from one room to another can be an unexpected place for some surprise-and-delight moments.
“We once had a premiere for a show that was set in New Orleans, and transitioning 250 guests from the screening room to the after-party was an opportunity for us to enhance the experience by bringing in a New Orleans-style second line band—who led the entire audience across a busy NYC street,' remembers Vox Media's Tara Reilly. 'It not only created a smooth transition, but it gave our audience an unexpected experience that was memorable and sparked conversation.”
