Fashion Week: Off-Site Shows Mix Up Presentation Styles With Ice Rink, Flash Mob

Anna Sekula
February 16, 2011

As designers settle into the new tents at Lincoln Center, the prevailing trend for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week shows this season is a minimalist aesthetic, with few additions to the modern setup of the spaces. Off site, however, presentations seem more adventurous, trying out creative and unusual staging ideas in a variety of venues.

Tommy Hilfiger split his collection, showing women's wear at the tents and taking his line for men to the more intimate space of West Village restaurant the Lion, while Richie Rich opened up his runway presentation to the public, offering tickets to the show at the Hammerstein Ballroom for $25 to $35. Elise Overland used the Standard's temporary ice rink as her show's catwalk, and Andrew Buckler shut down a section of Grand Street to put models on the road. Perhaps the biggest production was Moncler Grenoble's Sunday-night outing, which brought a flash mob of more than 100 dancers to the concourse of Grand Central Terminal.

Richie Rich opted to make his show on February 10 more inclusive by allowing the public to buy tickets. The event, which presented looks from the line the designer produces in conjunction with the King Collective, included catwalk appearances by Jersey Shore's Jwoww and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, as well as musical performances by the James Gang, an opera singer, and Rich.

Accompanied by 'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?' from The Sound of Music, Thom Browne's unconventional presentation created a churchlike setting with a makeshift altar inside the New York Public Library. Female models wore habits, which they removed with the help of male models in altar-boy-style outfits before walking the runway.

Moving guests from one room to another can be an unexpected place for some surprise-and-delight moments.
“We once had a premiere for a show that was set in New Orleans, and transitioning 250 guests from the screening room to the after-party was an opportunity for us to enhance the experience by bringing in a New Orleans-style second line band—who led the entire audience across a busy NYC street,' remembers Vox Media's Tara Reilly. 'It not only created a smooth transition, but it gave our audience an unexpected experience that was memorable and sparked conversation.”
