The Hills Are Alive: 9 Ideas for a 'Sound of Music'-Theme Party

Following the Lyric Opera of Chicago's example, here are clever ideas for hosting an event inspired by a classic musical.

May 22, 2014

The Sound of Music is the current production at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. To celebrate the classic musical, the opera's women's board hosted a thematic gala surrounding the performance on May 2. With cocktails, a dinner, and a reception during intermission, the event was full of tongue-in-cheek nods to the production. Here's a look inside the function, which had everything from edelweiss flowers to nuns' habits.

In the Graham Room, where guests had dinner before the show, tables were named after songs from The Sound of Music. They were also decked with blue linens and edelweiss flowers in patches of faux grass. HMR Designs handled the decor.

During the cocktail reception, guests could pose in a photo booth with thematic props that included nuns' habits and signs with phrases from the musical. When the photos printed out, they had a backdrop of mountains and blue skies.

Most guests that attended the fashion show heeded Dior's advice to take one of several chartered ferries that left every 10 minutes from the East River pier at 35th Street directly to the Navy Yard. On board, champagne was served and even all the seats were individually wrapped in Dior cloth with the fashion house's name embroidered on the headrests. Following the show, the same ferries shuttled guests back to Manhattan for dinner and an after-party.

Moving guests from one room to another can be an unexpected place for some surprise-and-delight moments.
“We once had a premiere for a show that was set in New Orleans, and transitioning 250 guests from the screening room to the after-party was an opportunity for us to enhance the experience by bringing in a New Orleans-style second line band—who led the entire audience across a busy NYC street,' remembers Vox Media's Tara Reilly. 'It not only created a smooth transition, but it gave our audience an unexpected experience that was memorable and sparked conversation.”
