The Times' Invitation Blunder

The New York Times has been catching flak over some missing invitations for the Wednesday good-bye party for editor Joseph Lelyveld, thrown by publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. at the New York Public Library's Celeste Bartos Forum. Inside.com reported on Tuesday that of the more than 1,000 news reporters and editors, fewer than 200 were invited. The Times rebutted, saying that dozens of high-level Times editors and writers just never got their invitations, which were sent to their work addresses via U.S. mail. Inside's Wednesday follow-up said planners are blaming the mishap on summer interns, who did some of the address labeling. And the organizers were calling all invitees who didn't RSVP.
