Lest any viewer be confused, those bright red cups with Coca-Cola logos that sit at Randy, Paula, and Simon’s judging table on American Idol are not exactly incidental props. A big sponsor of the Fox show, the soda giant unsurprisingly also turned up all over the party celebrating Idol’s top 12 contestants at the Pacific Design Center. Staffers in “I love American Idol” T-shirts welcomed guests at the door with plastic Coke bottles and straws, and bartenders poured adult “Coke floats” that mixed the soft drink with vanilla rum. Coca-Cola gobos decked the walls alongside the logos of Fox and cosponsor Ford.Wolfgang Puck served a hearty dinner of comfort foods like lasagna, mashed potatoes, and roasted veggies—followed up by down-home desserts like ice cream sandwiches and strawberry shortcake. Lighting washed the walls behind the bar in rainbow colors, and staff manned a cotton candy machine, spinning sugar in the same colors. DJ Pesce spun a mix of 80’s classics and hip-hop for a decidedly unpretentious, just-happy-to-be-there crowd of young contestants and friends.
Before the party, Fox vice president of special events Tomiko Iwata sent invitations—created by Fox’s in-house creative services team—printed on cards made to look like bumper stickers, accompanied by license plate-size cardboard parking passes surrounded by “I love American Idol” license plate frames.
