These casual new Mexican restaurants cater to large groups.
1. In the Gold Coast, Paradise Cantina opened in December. With a sand castle, beach-themed murals, and a prop surfboard, the space is available for buyout and can hold 325. For smaller groups, a semiprivate dining room with five flat-screen TVs can seat 30, and at the center of the space an elevated area can hold 100. On the lower level, a private room can accommodate 75. Menu items include fajitas, quesadillas, and tamales.
2. Set to open in Lincoln Park later this month, Taco Joint serves up its namesake fare amid wood and iron trappings, hand-painted murals, communal tables, and banquettes. Available for buyout, the vibrant space can seat 80 or hold 125 for a reception. A semiprivate room in back can seat 40. The bar offers tequila flights, sangria, and speciality cocktails, and the street-fare-focused menu includes tortas, flatbreads, and several types of guacamole.
