1. MTV ANNOUNCES BIG RATINGS FOR V.M.A.S: An estimated 10.1 million viewers watched the Video Music Awards, according to MTV, a huge boost from the 6.13 million a year ago. Variety: The show "also was a huge player across MTV’s Web, mobile, and social channels, with Sunday ranking as the biggest V.M.A. day in history. More than 4 million fans visited V.M.A. content on MTV.com, mobile Web, and MTV app, generating more than 15 million total streams—five times higher than last year’s show day." http://bit.ly/1901mhp
2. D.C. PLANS BID FOR SUMMER OLYMPICS: Washington plans to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics, forming a nonprofit group that will push the city to become the first American city to host the Summer Games since Atlanta in 1996. More cities are expected to become contenders, including Philadelphia, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and San Diego in a joint bid with Tijuana, Mexico. Associated Press: "There will be the need, however, for a new stadium to host the opening ceremony and track and field. Sweeney said he has met with the Washington Redskins, whose lease at their current stadium in Maryland expires in 2026. D.C. leaders will be pushing hard for the team to come back to the city at that time, so a stadium built for the Olympics could become an N.F.L. stadium shortly afterward." http://politi.co/1cg8eZY
3. MARKETING FOR N.F.L. OPENER ANGERS FANS: To promote its season opener in Denver, the N.F.L. and sponsor Pepsi have plastered the city with promotional banners, including some that feature opposing quarterback Joe Flacco of the Super Bowl champions Baltimore Ravens. A scheduling conflict with the Baltimore Orioles prevented the game from being in that city, so it moved west. Baltimore Sun quoted one upset fan: "Marketing fail by the N.F.L. Way to make people angry." http://bsun.md/152LszM
4. THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON: Today marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. While most think of the day as when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, the man whom insiders credit as the real force behind planning the massive march on the nation's capital is Asa Philip Randolph. Florida Times-Union: “I’ve always said—and it’s not to take away from the role of Dr. King or anyone else—but without A. Philip Randolph, there wouldn’t have been a March on Washington,” said Georgia Congressman John Lewis, who spoke at the event. “People should never, ever forget the role that A. Philip Randolph played. He should be looked at as one of the founding fathers of a new America, a better America.” http://bit.ly/183V6UU
