1. CAITLYN JENNER STARS AT ESPYS: The most buzzed-about moment at the ESPYs last night in Los Angeles was Caitlyn Jenner’s acceptance of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. The Olympic decathlon champion, who revealed she was transgender in April, skipped the red carpet and backstage interviews but received a standing ovation after her 10-minute speech urging the sports community to promote tolerance and acceptance. CBS News: “A video narrated by Mad Men actor Jon Hamm traced Jenner's life from the time when she was known as Bruce Jenner to her current transition. She mentioned she once considered ending her own life with a gun she owned. Caitlyn Jenner was shown applying makeup, buttoning her blouse in her closet and fastening the strap on her heeled shoes. With her trembling hands clasped in front of her, Jenner joked with the audience about her struggle to select the cream gown she wore. ‘OK girls, I get it,’ she said, as the audience laughed. ‘You've got to get the shoes, the hair, the makeup, it was exhausting. And the fashion police, please be kind on me. I'm new at this.’” http://cbsn.ws/1K93Jl6
2. STREAMING MUSIC BOOSTS CONCERT TICKET SALES: Artists have complained about low royalties from music-streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, but a new survey from Eventbrite shows that streaming drives ticket sales to concerts. Tech Crunch: “Access from anywhere at anytime lets people become immersed in the music. That means when the band comes to town, they’re ready to pay $25 to $50 for a concert ticket. … And that’s not where the money ends either. Once they’re at the show, all those listens on the train, in the office, and while working out make them more likely to buy a $30 t-shirt. It makes brands more willing to pay artists for sponsorship deals or to feature their song in a commercial, movie, or TV show.” http://tcrn.ch/1CFCmQf
3. MUSIC FESTIVALS BAN HEADDRESSES: Several Canadian music festivals have banned fans and artists from wearing First Nations headdresses following criticism that borrowing the symbols from indigenous cultures is offensive. Toronto Star: “The headdress-as-fashion-statement controversy arose at the Winnipeg Folk Festival on the weekend, after a woman was criticized on social media for wearing indigenous headwear. … [British Columbia’s] Bass Coast Festival had already prohibited the headdress in 2014, and the U.K.’s biggest festival, Glastonbury, banned selling headdresses on its ground before this year’s festival. Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the massive California music festival, is yet to make a decision regarding festival-goers wearing Native American outfits. Hundreds of Coachella attendees were pictured in the war bonnet this year.” http://on.thestar.com/1MuQF9X
