January 7, 2016: How Gun Show Managers Reacted to Obama’s New Rules, Stage Crasher Grabs Mic at People’s Choice Awards, Boycott Targets Comics Festival

1. HOW GUN SHOW MANAGERS REACTED TO OBAMA’S NEW RULES: A major component of President Barack Obama’s new executive actions on guns targets gun shows by requiring more dealers at gun shows to perform background checks on prospective buyers. While Republican presidential contenders and the National Rife Association have criticized the measures, managers at gun shows across the country have given a range of reactions, from acceptance to skepticism. Time: “Sandy Ackerman Klinger, president of the New York State Arms Collectors Association—which hosts the three largest gun shows in the state—said such a policy is hardly a revolutionary idea in some parts of the country. New York already requires background checks at gun shows, and she feels the restrictions have had no negative impact on business.”

2. STAGE CRASHER GRABS MIC AT PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS: A serial stage crasher briefly stole the spotlight at the People’s Choice Awards Wednesday in Los Angeles, grabbing the mic as the women from The Talk were accepting the award from favorite daytime TV hosting team. He used the moment to shout out to two rappers, Kanye West and Kevin Gates. The Hollywood Reporter: “An eyewitness tells THR that following the event, LAPD placed him in handcuffs inside the People’s Choice venue in downtown Los Angeles before releasing him shortly after.” http://bit.ly/1kOHDME

3. BOYCOTT TARGETS COMICS FESTIVAL: Comics creators are boycotting the Grand Prix d’Angoulême, the prestigious lifetime achievement award in the field, for failing to include a woman among the 30 nominees. Some of the nominees themselves are withdrawing from the competition, while the festival that sponsors the awards has defended its process. New York magazine’s Vulture blog: “On Tuesday, BD Égalité (‘BD’ standing for the French term for comics, bandes dessinées), a French organization that fights misogyny in comics, called for a boycott of the Grand Prix, and just a few hours later, American comics creator Jessica Abel introduced the campaign to English speakers on her Facebook account. The response has been overwhelming. A rolling wave of men who were nominated have withdrawn their names from consideration and tossed vitriol toward the Angoulême International Comics Festival, which runs the Grand Prix.” http://bit.ly/1PgH6vm

4. GRINDR DATING APP EXPERIMENTS WITH FASHION PARTNERSHIP: Grindr will be the only place to see a live stream of the J. W. Anderson runway show at London Collections: Men, marking an new strategy for the dating app, which primarily serves gay men. The New York Times: “The show is the first time Grindr is experimenting with fashion content, and most likely not the last. According to the company, it now has one million active users on the platform worldwide every minute, and is aiming to broaden its offerings and its appeal.” http://nyti.ms/1UyRWAB
