March 25, 2016: Daytime Emmys Drop Plans for Televised Ceremony, Why Music Festivals Need to Address Sexual Assault, What’s in Store for the Queen of England's 90th Birthday

1. DAYTIME EMMYS DROP PLANS FOR TELEVISED CEREMONY: Low ratings and high production costs forced the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to abandon plans to televise the Daytime Emmy awards, set to take place May 1 in Los Angeles. Variety: “Last year NATAS set a two-year deal with Pop, the CBS and Lionsgate-owned cabler, for telecast of the show after a debacle in 2014 when the ceremony aired as a live webcast. But NATAS decided that the six-figure cost of producing the ceremony for TV was too high even with the license fee offered by Pop. The New York-based academy is believed to be in discussions for another webcast partner.” http://bit.ly/1UdGyxB

2. WHY MUSIC FESTIVALS NEED TO ADDRESS SEXUAL ASSAULT: Ultra Music Festival wrapped up this weekend in Miami, leaving in its wake many happy fans of electronic music, but also fans exposed to sexual assault and harassment. The music festival had fewer arrests this year than in 2015, and organizers deployed 350 security guards in addition to 300 Miami police officers. But its website is silent on issues of sexual assault and harassment in its “Health and Wellness” section. Miami New Times: “Sexual assault is an omnipresent risk for women everywhere, but it's an elevated threat at music festivals, where it can take many shapes, often perpetrated with a disturbing nonchalance. There is an entire reality at music festivals, and within large crowds in general, visible only to women. … Still, the way we view safety at music festivals is narrow. Drugs typically hijack any conversation about the danger of EDM and dance music festivals. But the issue of sexual assault at these events has been gaining media traction within the past year. For the first time, Michigan's Electric Forest will provide a women-only campground in 2016, though the festival maintains its intention is not to protect against sexual assault.” http://bit.ly/22yw29c

3. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND'S 90TH BIRTHDAY: English pubs will stay open later for two nights in June in honor of the queen’s 90th birthday. Prime Minister David Cameron made the announcement to parliament. The Mirror: “The Government will hope the extra drinking time will be more popular than its Clean for the Queen Campaign which encouraged people to spend a day picking up litter.” http://bit.ly/1RBRKUA
