1. TONY AWARDS DELIVER WINNING SHOW: With hosts Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming providing “just the right combination of cute, cheeky, and respectful,” and a slate of surprising underdog winners, the Tony awards turned out a mostly entertaining show on Sunday. Hollywood Reporter: “Unlike the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys and their vast plethora of ugly awards-show stepchildren, the Tonys is the one major entertainment honors ceremony where the majority of contenders are inaccessible to much of the audience watching at home. But given the scarcity of marketing platforms available on a national — let alone international — level for Broadway, the Tonys represent a unique promotional opportunity, and producers foot huge bills to stage a splashy musical number during the telecast. This might be an honors ceremony but it’s also an infomercial, designed to keep the upward-trending audience numbers on that path.” http://bit.ly/1Glgx7U
2. FIFA COULD MOVE WORLD CUP FROM RUSSIA AND QATAR: Even as Russia and Qatar prepare to host the World Cup soccer tournaments in 2018 and 2022, respectively, the countries may lose hosting duties if an investigation uncovers bribery in the bidding process, according to a top FIFA official. NBC News: “The FBI's investigation of bribery and corruption at FIFA includes scrutiny of how soccer's governing body awarded World Cup hosting rights to Russia and Qatar, a U.S. law enforcement official told Reuters this week. … Russia and Qatar have previously denied wrongdoing in the conduct of their bids for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, which were not the subject of charges announced by U.S. prosecutors last week against FIFA officials.” http://nbcnews.to/1HWhccu
3. SHOULD EVENT PLANNERS BUY DRONE INSURANCE?: As drones are becoming more popular at events to provide aerial photography and video, their use brings up questions of liability in case of accidents—like when Enrique Iglesias sliced his hand on a drone at a concert last month. Billboard: “For touring artists, general liability insurance and workers’ compensation (covering injuries to artists or crew) is standard practice; many artists also carry property insurance, some form of business auto insurance, umbrella insurance and cancelation insurance, while artists, promoters and venues carry insurance that covers accidents and damage at events. But these policies, individually or combined, don’t necessarily include aircraft -- which is what drones are considered. … A commercial drone operator hired for an event is likely to have the requisite insurance, but more and more, industry professionals have been pushing artists, promoters and venues to obtain additional coverage in the event of an accident.” http://bit.ly/1eXHaFF
4. SUCCESS OF BOOKCON LEADS TO GROWTH: After the success of BookCon—a consumer component to Reed Exhibitions’ annual trade show for publishers and book sellers—the New York-based event will move to Chicago in 2016 and possibly still have a New York edition as well. Publishers Weekly: “Heather Fain, senior v-p and director of marketing strategy at Hachette Book Group, said she’s looking forward to meeting readers from other parts of the country: ‘Readers don’t just live in New York. If Reed puts together the programming with big names, I think they could get a crowd to come out in any major market. And I like the idea of interacting with readers outside the Tristate Area.’” http://bit.ly/1eXI053
