1. STUDY SUGGESTS HOW FASHION WEEK SHOULD CHANGE: As frustrations grow with the current form of New York Fashion Week, a much-anticipated study commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America released its findings on how the event needs to change. The Cut: “While the CFDA shied away from announcing the shift to consumer shows that some had predicted, it did strongly recommend that brands consider changing their approach, ultimately leaving the decision up to the designers themselves. The study suggested that labels host presentations or appointments for editors or buyers, sans the 'bells and whistles' of a runway show, during the current February and September time frames. Then they could follow them up with 'in-season events' — which, the report was careful to stress, does not necessarily mean a runway show, but could encompass a party, event, or video — that will get consumers excited about the collection.” http://thecut.io/1oUCFjS
2. ALASKA HAS TO HAUL IN SNOW FOR START OF IDITAROD RACE: Alaska has had such a warm winter and so little snow that organizers of the Iditarod dogsled race will have to haul in snow via freight train to have enough for the start of the race on Saturday. What’s more, the ceremonial start to the race may be shortened from its full 11 miles. Alaska Dispatch News: “It’s no secret that warm temperatures for days on end have further eroded what little snow cover existed on the trail system here in Anchorage,” Iditarod C.E.O. Stan Hooley said in a statement. “We are exploring our options at this time as we very well may need to shorten our Day 1 Ceremonial Start.” http://bit.ly/24xMjtl
3. PROMOTERS REEVALUATE COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVALS AFTER CANCELLATIONS: An explosion in the number of country music festivals nationwide and the increasing cost of booking top talent that helps sell tickets seems to have reached a peak, with nearly a half-dozen major country festival cancellations this year. Billboard: “The hottest genre in the festival business is showing real signs of softness for the first time in more than a decade. …. So far, the issues have affected only newer country festivals that were launched in 2015 and after. But more significantly, are the cancellations symptomatic of a growing problem with country music? In some ways, the genre is a victim of its own success, with a growing roster of arena and stadium headliners and a wealth of new festivals.” http://bit.ly/1RKTTda
