April 18, 2017: Kenyans Place First at Boston Marathon, 'Star Wars' Fans Show Love for Carrie Fisher at Convention, Fyre Festival Faces Disgruntled Guests and Supporters

1. KENYANS PLACE FIRST AT BOSTON MARATHON: Geoffrey Kirui won the 121st Boston Marathon on Monday, giving Kenya its first men's victory in five years. Edna Kiplagat, also from Kenya, won the women's race. U.S. Olympian Galen Rupp finished right behind Kirui and was one of several Americans who offered a strong showing at this year's marathon; two of the top four women's spots and six of the top ten for men were from the U.S. ESPN: "'It's so exciting to see Americans being competitive here,' said Rupp, the Olympic bronze medalist who was making his Boston debut. 'It's a real exciting time. And it's awesome to see American distance running on the upswing and being competitive in these races.'" http://es.pn/2oGaPuH

2. 'STAR WARS' FANS SHOW LOVE FOR CARRIE FISHER AT CONVENTION: This year's Star Wars Celebration, which wrapped up April 16 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, presented trailers, video game reveals, and theme-park news for fans of the franchise, as well as a chance for attendees and speakers to say good-bye to star Carrie Fisher, who died December 27, 2016. During the four-day event, presenters like George Lucas and Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, spoke of the actress's character—both in real life and on screen. The Verge: "If 2016’s avalanche of celebrity deaths taught us anything, it’s that the loss of artists or performers that we hold dear can affect us just as much as the death of friends and loved ones. But fans at Star Wars Celebration weren’t mourning Carrie Fisher the person, because most of them didn’t actually know her, no matter how revealing she was in books and interviews. They were mourning what she meant to them. The ferocity and humor; the cavalier attitude and enduring strength; the refusal to back down, no matter what life sent her. Those are the qualities Fisher came to represent through her work and her public persona, and over the years, that’s what Leia came to represent, too." http://bit.ly/2pqmX44

3. FYRE FESTIVAL FACES DISGRUNTLED GUESTS AND SUPPORTERS: The Fyre Festival, a brand-new, ultra-luxe music festival organized by Ja Rule and Billy McFarland, may be experiencing some growing pains. Ticket packages, which cost up to $250,000 for the two-weekend island event, include a round-trip flight from Miami International Airport to Exuma International Airport on Great Exuma, where the fest takes place April 28 to 30 and May 5 to 7. But there are reports that companies and invited social-media influencers are not happy. The New York Post: "Another source said, 'It feels like [the organizers] have good intentions, but are out of their league … Several companies bailed on working with them because they were very disorganized. They don’t return calls.'" http://pge.sx/2p9TZ9c
