October 3, 2013: Livestream Signs Deal With IMG, Microsoft to Return to C.E.S., AEG Cleared in Michael Jackson's Death

1. LIVESTREAM SIGNS DEAL WITH IMG: Livestream announced a partnership with the sports and fashion talent and marketing agency IMG to air live sports events from around the world. CNET: "As its technology has advanced to the point at which making live video look good is no longer the biggest hurdle, Livestream has adopted the strategy of targeting live-events partners as its platform of growth. By signing on partners with an existing niche market, Livestream is aiming to collect a diverse and large base of viewers and content producers who conglomerate into a bigger whole. It's a strategy to gather the scattered fans who don't form a critical mass that's large enough to attract a traditional television broadcaster."

2. MICROSOFT TO RETURN TO C.E.S.: After leaving the International C.E.S. in 2012, Microsoft will return in 2014. Although a low-key return—the software giant has booked meeting rooms and will not host a keynote—the show's organizers are touting the move as a win. BBC: "We have had a tremendous partnership [with Microsoft] going back to the very beginning," said Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Association. "You know, we had one little blip this year ... but now we're happy to have them back with a physical presence." http://bbc.in/1c44ptx

3. AEG NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MICHAEL JACKSON'S DEATH: A jury found that concert promoter AEG was not to blame for Michael Jackson's death, ending a civil lawsuit from the singer's family. Los Angeles Times: "The stakes for both the Jackson family and AEG were high. The Jackson family's financial expert testified that Jackson would have earned at least $1.2 billion from merchandise, new music, tours, endorsements and a Las Vegas show had he lived. The Jacksons wanted AEG to pay his children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, $85 million each and his mother, Katherine, at least $35 million." http://lat.ms/17uCAar

4. KOMEN REJECTS DONATION FROM VEGAS TOPLESS BAR: Crazy Girls at the Riviera offered to donate a portion of its ticket sales to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to mark the 26th anniversary of the topless revue, but the breast-cancer giant turned down the gift. Fox5 Vegas: "It just doesn't fall in line with who we are as an organization. There are too many survivors out there who no longer have the body part that is being displayed at a lot of these shows," said Stephanie Kirby, the charity's Southern Nevada executive director. http://bit.ly/18S5SQD

5. SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST LINES UP SPEAKERS FOR SPORTS EVENT: The Austin festival is launching a new component this year, SXsports, and has announced several speakers including data guru Nate Silver, who recently joined ESPN. Hollywood Reporter: "SXsports will incorporate screenings and panel elements, touching 'on all aspects of sports through the SXSW lens of culture, media and innovation,' according to a statement from SXSW organizers." http://bit.ly/1dUNnfA
