November 5, 2013: Oprah Hosts Yard Sale for Charity, How Event Fashion Is Changing, Fixing Event Economics

1. OPRAH HOSTS YARD SALE FOR CHARITY: Oprah Winfrey parted with a few of her favorite things, raising $600,000 in a yard sale for charity. People: “The treasures came from the 59-year-old media mogul's homes in Hawaii, Indiana and California, with the auction taking place inside three tents on the polo grounds in Santa Barbara, Calif. All proceeds from the sale benefited Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.” http://bit.ly/1e7qLeP

2. FIXING EVENT ECONOMICS: Crowdfunding as an event tool takes some of the economic risk out of planning an event—for both the planner and the guest, according to one event entrepreneur. Huffington Post: “No one should ever lose money for trying to host an event,” said Picatic C.E.O. Jay Parmar. “Once you are certain your event is going to be successful put it on. Crowdfunding the event allows event organizers to test their event without financial risk. Not only is it a great way to save yourself from going out of pocket, it also sparks creativity to try things that otherwise are impossible.” http://huff.to/1anZLQC

3. HOW EVENT FASHION IS CHANGING: The New York Times looks at how the fashions worn at this weekend’s Lacma Art & Film gala reflect the evolving style of event dressing: “The appearance in 2000 of Halle Berry in a Valentino gown at the Golden Globes and Jennifer Lopez in a plunge-front transparent Versace gown at the Grammys set off a collaboration between international designers and show business stars that has only grown bigger and louder with time. But the museum event, bringing together guests who exuded power and influence alongside stars who were classy rather than vulgar, suggested a genuine societal change.” http://nyti.ms/HtwwW7
