1. TAXPAYERS PICK UP SUPER BOWL TAB: New York State taxpayers are contributing $5 million to the budget to stage this Sunday’s Super Bowl and a number of marketing initiatives including a media party at Chelsea Piers tonight. Albany Times Union: “Empire State Development Corp. said the investment in the host committee's budget was prudent because the economic impact of the 2014 Super Bowl to New York is estimated to be more than $400 million, ‘making it the single biggest event to ever come to the New York area.’” goo.gl/UYOFJ9
2. GRAMMYS GET BIG RATINGS: The Grammys drew 28.5 million viewers, about even with its audience last year but still a major live event in an era of record-now-watch-later viewing habits. Hollywood Reporter: “The Grammys are the second-biggest award show on U.S. television, eclipsed only by the Academy Awards. CBS extended its deal with the Recording Academy in 2011, keeping the kudos put on the network through 2021. The 2014 Grammys now stand as the second most-watched in 22 years.” goo.gl/qyceZO
3. OLYMPIC ADVERTISERS FACE HASHTAG HIJACKING: Part of most branding initiatives these days involves creating a hashtag for fans, event guests, and companies to use on social media. But activists are taking over the hashtags of Olympic sponsors such as McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, using them instead to mount their own campaign against host country Russia’s strict antigay laws. The brands, meanwhile, are trying to take them back. New York Times: goo.gl/mNP0FD
