1. FOOD CONFERENCE SNUBS WHITE HOUSE: The School Nutrition Association denied a request from White House food policy czar Sam Kass to speak at its annual meeting of 6,500 school cafeteria workers and others in Boston. The rift reflects the politics surrounding reforms of school meals. “'We didn’t feel [our members] wanted to hear the rallying call,' [C.E.O. Patricia Montague] said. ‘We felt it was best he not come.’ … That’s a big difference from Kass’ appearance at SNA’s 2012 convention, in Denver, where he presented chef coats to the cafeteria professionals who appeared with him on an emotional episode of Chopped a few months earlier.” http://politi.co/1qGxpLO
2. WHY BASEBALL SHOULD CHANGE ITS ALL-STAR GAME: Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game was held in Minneapolis Tuesday, a once-celebrated event that has fallen behind in popularity. Baseball writers are suggesting that league officials consider innovations to the format to keep fans interested in the event. The Daily Beast: “Recent TV ratings have fallen off the charts, and the sideshow Monday evening Home Run Derby exhibition seems almost more popular than the actual Tuesday night regulation ballgame. … Might not the All-Star Game gain appeal simply by adopting a novel stance as the ideal laboratory for testing out future radical innovations for what already has become an ever-evolving sport?” http://thebea.st/1rgo94Z
3. 'THE ATLANTIC' PICKS NPR EXEC AS NEW EVENTS HEAD: The Atlantic has tapped Margaret Low Smith, senior vice president for NPR’s news operations, to lead its AtlanticLive events division. The New York Times: “AtlanticLive, which includes the Aspen Ideas Festival held in partnership with the Aspen Institute, is already a thriving business; the organization said revenue for the first half of the year jumped 37 percent. But in recent years, the number of media outlets programming such events has surged. NPR itself recently announced plans for a series of events hosted by the anchor of ‘Tell Me More,’ Michel Martin. ‘It’s a crowded space, so you have to do something that’s singular and differentiate yourself,’ Ms. Smith said of her new mandate. ‘In some ways they’ve set the standard on this and now they want to up their game even more, both on the editorial front, the ambition front and the business front.’” http://nyti.ms/1qGwcnW
