1. COMPLAINTS PUSH FESTIVAL TO DROP R. KELLY: The inaugural Fashion Meets Music Festival in Columbus, Ohio, pulled R. Kelly from its lineup after complaints about the R&B singer’s legal past, which include allegations of child pornography. USA Today: “Kelly performed at last year's Bonnaroo and Pitchfork festivals without much dissent, but Columbus citizens have been vocal in their disapproval. Bands and vendors have pulled out of the festival and many residents have voiced disapproval on Twitter and Facebook. … FMMF organizers, who initially defended the selection, took notice of community reaction and decided to remove Kelly.” http://usat.ly/1py8FU0
2. WEINSTEIN MOVIE PREMIERE GIVEAWAY USES GAMIFICATION: Fans of the movie The Giver are competing for a chance to attend the New York premiere of the film and its after-party through a fund-raising contest the Weinstein Company devised with Eventbrite. Mashable: “To earn a spot, people must enter Weinstein's ‘The Giver Movie Premiere for Good’ contest, which tasks participants to launch a simple fundraising campaign on Crowdrise. The amount of money a participant raises determines the location of his or her seat, with the best spots closer to the cast, which includes Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard. The funds will go toward charities benefitting the arts.” http://on.mash.to/UzgosH
3. COMIC-CON LAUNCHES MTVU’S FANDOM AWARDS: Filling a gap in the Comic-Con lineup, MTVU debuted the Fandom Awards, a telecast that drew 4,500 costume-wearing fans to San Diego’s Petco Park. The show aired Sunday on the network, which targets college-age viewers. Los Angeles Times: “The inspiration for the Fandom Awards came out of internal research MTV conducted on fan activity, according to Ryan Kroft, MTV’s senior vice president of specials and events. … In developing the show, the network concocted award categories to reflect the way fans engage with the films and TV series they love, such as OMG Moment of the Year, which went to the ‘Game of Thrones’ Purple Wedding episode, and Ship (as in relationship) of the Year, which was awarded to the characters Elena and Damon on ‘The Vampire Diaries.’” http://lat.ms/1nXgWUi
