August 21, 2015: Stink Bugs Infest Burning Man, Why Google Launched a Food Truck, What Makes New York’s New SeaGlass Carousel so Wildly Different

1. STINK BUGS INFEST BURNING MAN: Staff and volunteers setting up for the Burning Man festival in Nevada have reported an infestation of bugs at the desert venue, posting in a blog that “they’re everywhere.” They are working with health officials to identify the bugs and deal with the critters. Reno Gazette-Journal: “Although there have been reports of Burners being bitten by the unwelcome guests, it does not appear that they pose any kind of health risk to the more than 70,000 people that will be showing up Aug. 30 through Sept. 7. … None of the bugs has identified so far are bloodsuckers, which should be a consolation to Burners, although no official identifications have been made as of yet.” http://usat.ly/1WJ470P

2. WHY GOOGLE LAUNCHED A FOOD TRUCK: To promote the new Google Photos service, the search giant is offering free treats from a tricked out food truck. Los Angeles Times: "The catch? You have to pay with a photo. The Google Photos food truck is scheduled to roll into Los Angeles on Friday, with ice cream sandwiches from Coolhaus. If you want to score a free ice cream sandwich, have one of the truck employees give you a search term. It could be ‘flower,’ ‘dog,’ ‘beach,’ etc. Then find a photo featuring that term in your phone's gallery within 20 seconds.” http://lat.ms/1J8wnR3

3. WHAT MAKES NEW YORK’S NEW SEAGLASS CAROUSELSO WILDLY DIFFERENT: Designed like a nautilus, the just-opened SeaGlass Carousel in New York’s Battery Park is no ordinary carnival ride. The design, including the architecture, lighting, and 30 fish-like pods that guests ride in, provides a truly unusual experience. New York: “Once ensconced in your fish, you’ll find the ride different from any other carousel you’ve been on. McLaren Engineering designed a mechanism of circles within circles on one large turntable, and the fish yaw back and forth, in addition to bobbing up and down. It takes a minute to get your land legs back once you’ve had a spin. And then you might find yourself wanting to take up scuba diving.” http://nym.ag/1Ln6pME
