December 11, 2015: Golden Globe Broadcast Partner Shut Out of Nominations, Using Big Data to Combat Waste at Events, See Miller Lite's Ugly Holiday Sweater Billboard

1. GOLDEN GLOBE BROADCAST PARTNER SHUT OUT OF NOMINATIONS: NBC is set to air the Golden Globe awards on January 10, but the network won’t have much to celebrate that night: It was shut out of the nominations, which were announced Thursday. Variety: “Nowhere is the new reality of TV more evident than in the Golden Globes’ total TV nominations tally, which saw HBO end its 14-year streak of leading the TV field by a wide margin as Netflix elbowed past the premium giant. The 2016 heat marks the first time that HBO hasn’t been No. 1 since 2000, when The Sopranos and Sex and the City first made the channel a formidable contender in the top series categories. ABC was the last broadcast network to dominate the Globes, back in 1999.” http://bit.ly/1HX9LbE

2. USING BIG DATA TO COMBAT WASTE AT EVENTS: Event planners may make gestures toward sustainability—offering recycling stations or composting food waste—but to truly commit to green events there needs to be measurement. That’s why some planners are using the tools of big data to measure their efforts. CNBC: “Many top brands understand the value of being seen as environmentally responsible, [Inward Point co-founder Brendan Doherty] said. But events are planned without that in mind — a lot of waste is generated, and companies pay little attention to it. Inward Point tracks the environmental effect of events it plans, down to the most minute detail. For example, the company gives its clients a list of waste statistics, broken down into the sources of waste by material, and how exactly they were disposed of. Then the client is presented with data how their waste generation compares to industry averages. ‘We measure the impact of our events from social and environmental perspectives — it's a big data approach,’ Doherty said. The idea is that clients will use that data to tell a deeper story about their brands, and to make them more appealing to a younger, more socially aware generation of buyers.” http://cnb.cx/1jQYQEA

3. SEE MILLER LITE'S UGLY HOLIDAY SWEATER BILLBOARD: Infusing some kitschy holiday spirit into its advertising, an artist rendered a handwoven ugly sweater billboard for the beer brand Miller Lite. Located near New York’s Times Square, the massive work is made from real yarn. Adweek: “Agency Olson worked with Brooklyn artist London Kaye to crochet the cheery monstrosity, which features reindeer and, of course, beer (the iconic Miller Lite Steinie bottle that launched the brand in 1975). The process … took over three weeks of handweaving (tedious work, even by ad production standards).” http://bit.ly/1Z1bcdo
