1. RAIN AND POLITICAL MOMENTS HIGHLIGHT MTV MOVIE & TV AWARDS: The newly renamed and revamped MTV Movie & TV Awards took place on Sunday, offering political moments onstage and weather that was less than ideal for the red carpet. Los Angeles Times: "If the weather had had its way, however, the show would not have gone on. What started out as a light drizzle turned into a full-fledged hailstorm Sunday afternoon, shutting down the red carpet. Both media and talent were shepherded into the garage of the Shrine Auditorium to wait out the storm, which lasted roughly 10 minutes. The carpet did not reopen. The show opened live (tape-delayed for the West Coast) from the Shrine Auditorium with host Adam Devine re-creating scenes from some of the year's top films, including a hilarious 'Beauty and the Beast' dance sequence featuring a 'Tale as Old as Time' rendition. Josh Gad joined Devine onstage, reprising his role in the film as LeFou. Devine also took a trip to 'Get Out's' 'sunken place.' But all eyes were on the night’s first award, for best actor in a movie. The category, dubbed the first in history to consider a performer regardless of sex or gender, was presented by 'Billions’' Asia Kate Dillon, who identifies as nonbinary. ... If such a play for equality wasn’t political enough, the show altered its best fight category to best fight against the system and recruited outspoken California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, along with 'black-ish’s' Tracee Ellis Ross, to present it. And the winner? 'Hidden Figures.' 'I was invited, and I think it's because of what’s going on with millennials and their involvement in politics and helping to get this president impeached,' Waters said on the red carpet." http://lat.ms/2qS5fnp
2. U.K. MUSIC FESTIVALS RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT SEXUAL VIOLENCE WITH WEBSITE BLACKOUT: Several major U.K. music festivals, including Secret Garden Party and Festival, are holding a website blackout today to raise awareness about sexual violence at the events. The festivals also have signed a charter pledging zero tolerance. The Guardian: "The Safer Spaces campaign, launched by the Association of Independent Festivals, has been backed by 28 events across the country, including Bestival, End of the Road, Secret Garden Party and Parklife. In order to promote the message, festivals will take part in a 24-hour web blackout and anyone visiting their website will be greeted simply with the hashtag #saferspacesatfestivals. Lauren Down, the managing director of End of the Road, said they wanted to use their public platform as a festival to speak openly about the issues of sexual assault, particularly that of consent. ... Down said the festival community had not always been as open as it needed to be on the issue of sexually motivated incidents, 'which is why we’re bringing this conversation out of closed meeting rooms into the public sphere'. The festivals have also signed a charter of best practice. The pledges include a zero-tolerance approach to sexual assaults, the promotion of consent and the provision of better training to staff to understand how to sensitively deal with incidents and people who report them. The issue of sexual assault at festivals has only recently been tackled head on by organisers, despite dozens of incidents every year." http://bit.ly/2qMHNI4
3. FEMALE JUDGES AT CANNES LIONS HAVE DOUBLED IN LAST FIVE YEARS: The number of female judges at next month's Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity will have doubled in the last five years, to 43.5 percent. Eight of the 23 jury presidents also are women. Advertising Age: "This has been a hot-button issue for years. Until 2014, just one in five Cannes judges were women, and there were only one or two female jury presidents each year. Since then, the festival has introduced programs like See It Be It, which invites 15 future female creative leaders to the festival each year, and added the Glass Lions category in 2015 at the suggestion of Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg and LeanIn.org to recognize work that promotes more equal gender representation. This year, the festival has agreed to caution jurors not to recognize work that reflects gender bias. The festival said today that 43% of this year's 390 judges from 50 countries will be women, up from 21% in 2012 and 20% in 2013. (After that, the numbers grew steadily, to 28.5% in 2014, 31.5% in 2015 and 40% last year). Progress has been particularly noticeable in the Mobile jury, which didn't have a single female judge in 2013. The issue erupted at that year's press conference to announce the Mobile winners, when a jury member urged journalists to go back to their countries and tell their festival representatives to nominate more women. The following year, the Mobile jury had a female president, and the Grand Prix went to Nivea and a creative team headed by a woman, Joanna Monteiro, then VP-creative director at FCB Brazil. Ms. Monteiro, currently Brazil's only female chief creative officer, chaired the next Mobile jury in 2015. (There may be some backsliding on the Mobile jury, with five female judges last year and just three this year.)" http://bit.ly/2pP5hyZ
