January 14, 2016: How Many Big-Time Summer Music Festivals Can New York Support?, CBS Announces Technology Upgrades for Super Bowl Broadcast, Times Square to Get ‘Kissing Booth’ Installation

1. HOW MANY BIG-TIME SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVALS CAN NEW YORK SUPPORT?: Producers of the popular Governors Ball in New York are not taking news of a rival music festival well. They’re criticizing the event as well as the city’s process for approving Panorama Fest, which will take place this summer. Panorama is a production of Goldenvoice, the producers of Coachella. Billboard: “This is a short-sighted and disappointing solution,” said Tom Russell, founder of Governors Ball producer Founders Entertainment. “The city needs a long-term strategy for approving music festivals that ensures it is maximizing the economic and community impact of these events. Scheduling two same-genre festivals on top of each other like this makes it difficult for either to provide the maximum benefit to its fans, its neighbors and taxpayers." Goldenvoice festival producer Mark Shulman countered that “NYC sustains multiple music festivals and Panorama will add one additional entertainment option over the summer.” http://bit.ly/1Q5EWDp

2. CBS ANNOUNCES TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES FOR SUPER BOWL BROADCAST: CBS announced new technologies it will use during the broadcast of Super Bowl 50 from Santa Clara, California, on February 7. It also announced that Gayle King will interview President Obama and First Lady Michele Obama during the network’s pregame show. CBS News: “The EyeVision 360 system, comprised of 36 cameras strung around the upper deck of Levi's Stadium, has the ability to freeze the moment and revolve around the play, then continue to play out the scene. It allows viewers to have a look in a moment's time from what the quarterback sees in the pocket to the safety's perspective or other points on the field.” http://cbsn.ws/1REzHfI

3. TIMES SQUARE TO GET "KISSING BOOTH" INSTALLATION: Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a pavilion installation in New York’s Times Square will offer people a chance to spend time in a kissing booth. Architecture studio Collective-LOK designed the project, dubbed “Heart of Hearts,” which will debut February 9. Wired: “Their clever solution consists of 10-foot-tall pairs of ‘paper hearts’ (they’re aluminum) that form a faceted ring. From the outside, the golden hearts reflect the bright lights of the city; from the inside of the ring, visitors will see themselves reflected. Each pair of hearts doubles as a kissing booth that visitors can pop inside of to get a moment of solitude. They aren’t totally enclosed—the designers don’t want people getting too intimate—but provide a moment’s respite from the hustle and bustle of what is surely one of the city’s busiest neighborhoods.” http://bit.ly/1RwAPSw
