Foodies were swarming all over the city during the past few days for the hoopla surrounding the 11th annual James Beard Foundation Awards. There were all kinds of dinners and parties surrounding the annual event, and untold pounds of fabulously prepared food were consumed. The foundation's journalism awards were given out on Sunday night at the Grand Hyatt, which was followed by a Bon Appetit party at Tuscan Steak. Then Monday night's restaurant and chef awards--billed as the Oscars of the food world, of course--took place in the Broadway Ballroom of the Marriott Marquis, where more than 1,600 restaurant and food industry folks gathered to honor their own. Some of the the winners: Michael Romano of Union Square Cafe won the American Express Best Chef Award for New York City, and other Manhattan winners included Alain Ducasse, Bouley Bakery, Gramercy Tavern and Russian Tea Room. A wine country-themed tasting reception followed the awards program one floor below in the Westside Ballroom. And then the fabulous official after-party was at Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich's Esca, where actors dressed as mermaids handed out strings of plastic pearls.
