VENUE: Moroccan Spice at Zitoune

E1659disc 01 1203 Zittone 1 152
In the former site of Menu, which apparently didn't fly so well with Pastis so closeby, is Zitoune, a new Moroccan restaurant from Menu owner Alain Bennouna and chef Julian Clauss-Ehlers, who hope to bring some spice to the meatpacking district. The redesigned space now features fire engine red chairs paired with white and pale yellow tablecloths and bench seating upholstered with warm reds, oranges and browns. Clauss-Ehlers traveled to Marrakech and Fez to learn the secrets of Moroccan cuisine, and the resulting menu offers dishes like carpaccio with cinnamon couscous and a tagine of veal cheeks. The New York Times has already proclaimed it the best Moroccan in the city. The space can seat 80, or hold 100 for cocktails. Prices to close out the space start at $3,000. --Suzanne Ito
