A Japanese menu with Brazilian touches await diners at Vela, a pretty, 100-seat restaurant in the Flatiron District. The entryway has a dramatic waterfall and walls sprayed with 18-carat gold paint. The dining room has dark woods and gimmicky tables with hydraulic systems that can raise the table height from 22 inches to 30 inches. Decorative steel screens with Brazilian-inspired diamond patterns section off portions of the dining room from the bar and the semiprivate lounge area. Vela is scheduled to open Monday. —Mark Mavrigian
