Beard Foundation Announces Award Nominees

The James Beard Foundation hosted a reception last week to announce the nominees of the 2006 James Beard awards. The New York-based nominees include Daniel Boulud, Drew Nieporent, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who will vie against Chicago-based Richard Melman and Las Vegas-based Wolfgang Puck for the outstanding restaurateur award.

The outstanding chef award nominees include Tom Colicchio (whom we interviewed last year) for Craft, Nobu Matsuhisa for Nobu, and Alfred Portale for Gotham Bar & Grill. Del Posto and the Modern were both nominated for the best new restaurant award. David Chang of Momofuku Noodle Bar was nominated for the rising star chef award for chefs under 30.

Architecture firm Bentel & Bentel (partner Paul Bentel talked to us last year) was nominated for an outstanding restaurant design award for its design of the Modern. They're up against Brooklyn-based Evan Douglis Studio, for its design of the now-closed Haku. Mucca Design Corporation was nominated twice, for its work on Country and Sant Ambroeus, in the outstanding restaurant graphics category.

Finally, the biggie of the night for those in attendance at the Marriott Marquis for the May 5 awards ceremony—which ABC and NPR news correspondent Cokie Roberts will M.C.—will be the best chef in New York City award. Nominees are Dan Barber for Blue Hill, David Burke for David Burke & Donatella, Floyd Cardoz for Tabla, Gabriel Kreuther for the Modern, and David Waltuck for Chanterelle.

The complete list of nominees is on the James Beard Foundation Web site.
