Coupe Magazine,
a biannual publication about design, has moved to a 2,000-square-foot
space at 998 Queen St. West. In addition to housing the Coupe design
studio, the new “Coupe Space” will also be available for rental as an
event venue. The former martial arts studio seats 110 guests and
accommodates 175 for receptions. It can also be divided into two
separate rooms. The look is cozy and eclectic with windows overlooking
the street and dark walnut floors. The proprietors are husband-and-wife
team Sacha and Bill Douglas. Sasha is a trained chef, formerly with
Dish Cooking Studio; she provides in-house catering from the site’s
open-concept kitchen. Bill is a graphic designer; his artwork graces
the walls. Furnishings include two dark wooden bars, lounge furniture,
dark wood benches, and a restored 100-year-old cedar table. The cost is $1,000 to $1,300 per night.
