In Los Angeles, event organizers used quick thinking—and a little strategic improvisation—to raise $200,000 for victims of Hurricane Katrina. With only seven days for planning, wine experts Ian Blackburn and Tim Smith formed LAsupportsLA (Los Angeles supports Louisiana) and put together a food and wine-tasting fund-raiser. Judy Barker donated the use of Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar, and HIS Productions allowed the fund-raiser to use an enormous 80- by 50- by 15-foot tiered black stage it had built for a Ford Explorer photo shoot scheduled for the next morning at the venue.
