Iowa Dems, Repubs to Entertain Media Types Together

Des Moines isn’t typically a top New Year’s Eve destination, but considering both the Republican and Democratic Iowa caucuses are on January 3, media types will have to settle for the Midwestern locale. And according to U.S. News & World Report's Washington Whispers column, the right and the left are joining forces to entertain the journalists in town with a New Year’s Eve party.

Iowa party spokespeople Carrie Giddens (D) and Mary Tiffany (R) are planning the event at the Temple for Performing Arts. In an email sent to Washington Whispers, Giddens said, “Mary Tiffany and I decided that with the caucuses so close to [New Year’s Eve], reporters would be looking for something to do in Des Moines that night.... This is not a rare bipartisan moment, after all we are working on caucus night together, but a chance to make sure reporters have a good time in Iowa on [New Year’s Eve] before a sprint through the nominating calendar." Traditional Iowan foods (think Maytag blue cheese and corn dogs) are on the menu, and a cash bar will cut out any “who’s paying for this drink?” worries.

The planners sent out an email invite saying, “And you thought you’d have nothing to do but work on New Year’s Eve in Des Moines! Put down your laptops, notebooks, and cameras on the 31st.... There will be yummy Iowa hors d’oevures, tasty drinks, a champagne toast at midnight, and music to get your groove on.”
