1. INAUGURAL FUNDRAISING: A change since 2009, Pesident Obama will accept corporate donations for his second-term inauguration, offering top donors "exclusive access to an array of inaugural festivities, including tickets to a 'benefactors reception,' a children’s concert, a candlelight celebration at the National Building Museum, two reserved parade bleacher seats, and four tickets to the president’s official inaugural ball." New York Times: http://nyti.ms/TLBHUD

2. ALCOHOL-FREE HOLIDAY PARTIES: Company holiday parties often serve alcohol, but one recent survey points to the negative consequences, with nearly two-thirds of Americans calling in sick or knowing someone who has missed a day at work because of a hangover after a holiday party. Many who do come to work report being hungover or leaving the workday early. The Fix: "Remaining sober around co-workers during off-hours may sound like a recipe for extreme awkwardness, but … a sober office party is actually a seasonal gift for all involved." http://bit.ly/V1kXVc

Wall Street holiday parties still exist, they just have gone underground. New York Magazine: "Most banks just canceled their firm-wide parties and instead authorized individual groups to hold their own unofficial bashes, often paid for out of pocket by managers. This allowed them to avoid Main Street's wrath while still giving employees the chance to ring in the season." http://nym.ag/YKKeLq

3. GANGHAM BACKLASH: The South Korean "Gangnam Style" sensation Psy was permitted to perform at the annual Christmas in Washington concert despite revelations just days before the event that in 2004 he rapped in a song about killing and torturing Americans. Psy apologized, and President Obama and his family attended the charity event as planned. Los Angeles Times: "At the end of the performance, Obama made a brief speech to the crowd about the holiday season and the charity. He did not mention Psy." http://lat.ms/WWAsiT

4. MIAMI'S HOTTEST NEIGHBORHOOD: The effects of Art Basel go beyond parties to transforming neighborhoods like Miami's Wynwood. New York Times: "The newfound allure of Wynwood is the latest testament to how art—and creative developers, like Tony Goldman, who helped remake SoHo and South Beach—can sprinkle its metaphysical magic and transform even the bleakest places. … Now Wynwood is moving beyond galleries. Restaurants and bars with a fresh flavor are beginning to open. A crafts coffee place is booming. A New York mixologist, Albert Trummer, is preparing for an opening. And a recording studio that has drawn clients like Akon and Enrique Iglesias opened this year." http://nyti.ms/XJe6Xp

* ABOUT THIS WEEKEND *

BizBash Miami correspondent Tracy Block has been busy at Art Basel all week. Here are highlights from three events: At One Ocean Friday, the Related Group and UBS hosted an upscale dinner party on the new South Beach property. Glass lanterns hung from trees providing low lighting, while cocktail tables were colored in brown and white schemes. Inside, the space featured art by Jose Bedia and design by Jorge Perez. Guests sipped Veuve Clicquot and ate canapés by Karla Catering. At the Moore Building, Russell Simmons hosted a Bombay Sapphire bash, where blue lights colored the all-white space. Entertainers performed a balancing act on beams across the second story of the building, while guests enjoyed Bombay Sapphire cocktails from bars decorated in pieces with travel-size bottles and hydrangeas. Saturday, the MAM Crash the Ball after-party took place outside the Miami Art Museum. Outside on the MAM patio, a clear tent created a pop-up dance floor experience, with a circular glass bar dressed in white orchids. A Shutterbox Entertainment photo booth offered posing opportunities, with a slideshow projecting the images onto the walls of MAM. Several lounging areas featured black cushioned seating and low mirrored tables.
