At the star-studded party at Top of the Rock for Black Orchid, Tom Ford’s first fragrance for women and the first product released from his new line for Estée Lauder, Katherine Holmes, director of global communications for the line, and frequent event collaborator Jonathan Reed of SPEC Entertainment executed the designer’s concept for a dark, sultry lounge filled with black and gold decor.
Inspired by the Lalique-designed Black Orchid bottle and Rockefeller Center’s Art Deco feel, Reed lined the room with black velvet banquettes trimmed with gold details, while black plexiglass folding screens—a takeoff on the screens used in Ford’s window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue—lined the glass walls and concealed Design 1’s lighting trusses. Sleek gold-topped bars on the terraces incorporated chic shaded lamps, and a nine-foot-tall replica of the Black Orchid bottle (produced in California and shipped in three pieces to fit in Top of the Rock’s elevator) sat over the black plexi DJ booth. The bottle provided the backdrop for Jennifer Hudson’s surprise performance at the height of the party: The singer, who appears in the new film adaptation of Dreamgirls, emerged from behind the bottle to perform a set on the stage above the DJ booth.
