Big Meetings, Conventions on 2008 Summer Schedule

The Washington, D.C., Convention & Tourism Corporation announced yesterday that it has secured more than 2.8 million hotel-room nights for meetings and conventions booked at the Washington Convention Center between 2008 and 2023—a number that translates roughly into $1.9 billion in spending.

According to the WCTC, the convention center has booked several large groups for next year's slow summer months. They include the National Education Association's annual meeting for 17,000 over the July 4th weekend, as well as the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority's 100th anniversary from July 12-18, which is expected to bring some 20,000 sisters to the district, and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry's annual meeting for 17,000 attendees from July 27-30. After spending last summer in Boston, the GE Healthcare 2008 User Summit is heading to Washington from August 18-21, and some 25,000 AARP members are expected to attended that organization's 50th anniversary from September 3-6.Other large 2008 conventions include the American Council on Renewable Energy's WIREC trade show and conference for 10,000 from March 2-6, and the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting, drawing some 15,000 expected attendees from May 4-8.

Just around the corner is the American Public Health Association's annual meeting for 14,000, taking place at the convention center from November 4-7.
