After working together in visual merchandising at Winston Flowers, Erica Clougherty and Kara Rullo joined forces to launch Blooms of Boston in June. Already on the list of preferred vendors at the Colonnade Hotel, the company has worked mostly on weddings and is now courting business for fund-raisers and holiday parties.

The partners say that their work has a modern-meets-classic look, and they avoid designs that feel overdone. "Peonies and orchids are our main inspiration," says Rullo, who adds that she and Clougherty gravitate toward fragrant, natural-looking white blossoms, though they also let the season and their client's preferences shape their work. For a health care company's summertime conference, Blooms of Boston put together bright arrangements that contained peach roses, sunflowers, white hydrangeas, craspedia, and berries. The duo can deliver to offices and event spaces in the Boston area, southern New Hampshire, and—when necessary—Cape Cod.

The company also offers flower-arranging classes for groups. The one-to-three-hour sessions can be held in offices or event spaces, and cost $50 to $75 per person, with a maximum of 20 guests.
