Art and fashion collided for Smock magazine's Release party, a celebration of the mag's new winter issue at Diane von Furstenberg's studio and shop in the West Village. The art/fashion/culture mag created a simple decor scheme that took advantage of the store's stark white walls. Pink Inc. anchored a fabric sculpture the company calls the "Tree of Life" in the middle of a bar (does that mean booze is at the root of life?).Big Wave International's Brian Winthrop created a beautiful multilayered lighting design by positioning lights inside the sculpture and at various positions around the store. Winthrop also used images from the magazine to shine projections on the walls that would regularly dissolve into new images. The lighting scheme would also shift periodically into different palettes of pastel colors from the magazine's latest issue. The lighting was also highlighted by the room's smoky look--not from hazers, but from the billows of cigarette smoke from the crowd of fashion and art types.
Von Furstenberg's studio was adorned with several portraits of the famed designer--the party was as much of a promotion for her as it was for the mag--including a recent portrait of her by Ahn Duong (which was featured in the feted winter issue) and the famous Andy Warhol silkscreen of her from the 70's. Her large studio and store space--which includes a reflecting pool lined with Moroccan tiles, a tall spiraling staircase and lounge furniture upholstered with fabrics patterned after some of her dresses--accommodated the party perfectly.
