The Baycrest Centre Foundation's Tables of Distinction event set another benchmark in tabletop design in its fourth year, presenting new looks in dining decor from more than 40 participants while raising money for the foundation's research of Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders.
Janice O'Bright and Joanne Nisker of the Baycrest Women's Auxilary coordinated the two-day fund-raiser, held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto. Designers from all over Toronto created different tables with a variety of designs, from low-key and elegant to brightly coloured and flamboyant. An Affair to Remember created a table in conjunction with Around the Table and Micki's with a shopping theme: the table linens were bright fuchsia, lime green, and black, with a costumed three-dimensional bustier set in the centre and surrounded by shopping bags. An installation by Sinclair Russell and Stephan Wypchol with assistance from Yukon Events (topiaries and furniture), Chair-man Mills (tableware and linens), and GianRocco (flowers and foliage), showcased a fantasy woodland setting within a topiary arch, with cropped chair covers and a lush glass-and-branch central display.
Other entries included the Carlu, highlighting the style and glamour of the 1930's, and artist Ian Leventhal's design tribute to Chinese food set against a vibrant backdrop of dragons, temples, and Shanghai skyscrapers.
