Is there a company that doesn't want to associate itself with design and high fashion? Skyy took advantage of the stylish crowd converging on New York for Fashion Week to launch Skyy90, a new vodka, at Stone Rose in the Time Warner Center. (Unfortunately, another vodka launch—for the Russian brand Imperia—the same evening got more attention, with 1,600 guests on Liberty Island and a performance by Duran Duran. Skyy also competed with In Style's Clothes We Love fashion show on the center's ground level.)
Skyy emphasized the sleekness of the new vodka's bottle to associate the drink with luxury and high design. Skyy event coordinator Elizabeth Colton asked Scott Bromley from Bromley Caldari Architects, Laura Day from Laura Day Design, interior designer Libby Langdon, and event designer Antony Todd to create designer martini bars with the same basic bar frame.
Day’s bar featured a white wood backdrop decorated with faux diamond teardrops and white ceramic doves, and a crystal bartop ornamented with diamonds and feathers. The body of the bar was covered with white leather with silver beads.
“My inspiration was surf, sand, sky...it’s after Labor Day, [and] this was the last grip on summer,” said Langdon, whose beach-theme bar had a white wood frame with seashells and blue and white touches decorating the exterior. The top of the bar was filled with shells and sand and covered with Lucite.
Bromley suspended men's neckties from a sleek chrome frame. Todd's bar was white and transparent, and the bottom portion was filled with ice water. Travis Bass designed the event's overall environment, with chrome accents to decorate the tables and bar. He placed wheat among the flower arrangements—Skyy90 is made from it, after all.
Chef & Company served appetizers of shrimp, duck summer rolls, California rolls, spicy tuna dragon rolls, and bacon-wrapped dates. Of course, plenty of specialty martinis—containing Skyy90—were mixed and poured.
While this event was the final launch of the year (previous launches have taken place in San Francisco, San Diego, Miami, Cleveland, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles and Colorado), it was the first with the designer bars. Colton reports that the company plans to use the same concept with different designers throughout 2006.
