Golden Globe Awards Highlights: Pull Event Inspiration From 15 Past Golden Globe Events

In anticipation of this weekend’s Golden Globe Awards, we’re taking a look back at past after-parties, viewings, galas and more that are chock-full of event inspiration.

February 25, 2021

This Sunday, the 78th Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC, recognizing the best in American and international film and television over the course of 2020—a year during which more people than ever were cozied up at home on the couch, with their favorite streaming service (and snacks, of course) to keep them company during quarantine.

While everyone loves a good red-carpet moment, what event pros really look forward to are the surrounding events that offer no shortage of steal-worthy, scalable event inspiration. In anticipation of this weekend’s Golden Globes, grab your popcorn (or Champagne!) as we take a look back at some of the award show's most memorable event design moments over the years.

WarnerMedia & HBO Afterparty 2020

Typically one of the night’s buzziest bashes, the WarnerMedia and HBO post-award party took place at Circa55 restaurant and adjacent pool area. Produced by HBO’s Cindy Tenner and Ashley Covarrubias alongside longtime collaborator Billy Butchkavitz, the event drew around 1,500 people—including casts from 2020 Globes winners Succession and Chernobyl, plus other A-listers from Big Little Lies, Barry, and more. The indoor-outdoor gathering had a circular design theme and a color palette of blush and honeysuckle pink, dove and charcoal gray, plus assorted shades of gold.

Stars from The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Crown, and more gathered in the Robinson-May Lot adjacent to the Beverly Hilton for the Netflix after-party last year. The tented soiree, located at the end of the red carpet, was produced by Netflix’s Catherine McTiernan and Kelli Hill along with Best Events. Intended to celebrate the golden age of Hollywood—both past and present—decor was a modern twist on an art-deco theme. The entrance courtyard featured a canopy of golden chandeliers, plus a custom bar menu with drinks from Casamigos and food from Craig’s and Crustacean. The space also included the “Refresh Lab,” a partnership with Glossier and Moët where guests could get makeup touch-ups. Another highlight: a shoe valet, where guests could trade their shoes for a comfortable pair of Netflix-branded slides, handed over in branded totes.

Disney Golden Globes Viewing & After-party 2020
Disney Golden Globes Viewing & After-party 2020
After acquisitions, Disney took over what had once been known as the 21st Century Fox party on the Beverly Hilton roof deck. The large bash encompassed all Disney and Fox properties, plus ABC, Hulu and National Geographic—so it’s no surprise it drew star-studded names such as Ramy Youssef, the 2020 winner for best actor in a TV comedy, plus producer Ryan Murphy and actors Ben Platt and Billy Porter. Housed in a clear-top tent, the event’s decor featured neutral tones with pops of color and hanging greenery. Seating was a mix of plush couches and round tables. For food, the event offered a large sushi bar plus cheeseburger sliders and mini grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. The event was produced by 15/40 Productions. Held in the Beverly Hilton's Oasis Courtyard, the 20th annual Warner Bros. and InStyle party, sponsored by Cadillac and L’Oréal Paris, was designed and produced by JOWY Productions. The team constructed a tent that covered the hotel's fountain, transforming the courtyard into an elegant, living room-inspired atmosphere. Black-and-white color blocking was punctuated by splashes of gold, which continued with a grouping of "golden globes" that hung above the bar area. Bright provided the event rentals, while Wildflower and La Tavola handled linens and SS Scenic provided fabric. Props and decor were provided by Studio D Decor, Revelry, Mr. Foam & Scenic and Theoni. Images by Lighting handled the lighting.

Art of Elysium’s Heaven Gala 2019
Nonprofit organization Art of Elysium hosted its 12th annual black-tie celebration in 2019 at a private venue in Koreatown. The evening, which is traditionally held the night before the Golden Globes, honored photographer Michael Muller and artist Beau Dunn, and featured a fashion show by Peter Dundas. The event's cocktail space was inspired by Muller's vision of Heaven, which included oceanic views and panoramic underwater seascapes, plus wall art featuring sharks and other underwater plants and animals. The event was produced by Katie Limle of Event Eleven. See more: Golden Globes 2019: Get Inspired by This Year’s Glamorous Parties

Held on the roof deck of the Beverly Hilton, Fox’s annual party brought together 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, FX, National Geographic and Hulu for one blowout bash. 15/40 Productions produced the popular event, constructing a bar that offered a dramatic focal point in the center of the room. The elegant look featured a color palette of deep reds, blues, and golds, with glittering chandeliers overhead.

Netflix Golden Globes Party 2018
After co-hosting with the Weinstein Company for several years, Netflix started hosting its own event in 2018, which proved to be one of the most popular events on the Globes party circuit. Upon entering the Netflix party, guests were offered a glass of wine by hands coming from a Netflix-branded wall. They also could stop by a shoe valet and trade in their heels or dress shoes for a pair of slippers that matched the all-red color scheme. Netflix worked with Swisher Productions to produce the event. See more: Golden Globes 2018: Peek Inside This Year’s Biggest Parties

NBCUniversal Golden Globes Party 2017
NBCUniversal Golden Globes Party 2017
The overall theme of NBCUniversal’s 2017 viewing- and after-party was 1920s modern deco. Event producer Angel City Designs created the look with a color palette featuring pewter, navy and fuchsia with copper accents throughout the space. For a supper club-like feel, guests sat at café tables, curved couches, and half-round banquettes, all with a prime view of the multiple 90- and 60-inch plasmas located throughout the tent. As part of NBCUniversal's commitment to events with a lower environmental impact, the majority of the lighting in the party from Kinetic Lighting used LEDs that consumed less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs. Additionally, large items such as carpeting and artificial turf were recycled rather than destroyed so as to minimize the impact of the party on landfills. HBO’s themed "winter garden” party in 2016 boasted a color palette of gold, black and cream. The centerpiece of the space was a Gothic-style conservatory, which Butchkavitz's team built atop the hotel's iconic swimming pool. The winter garden motif was reflected in patterned linens and carpet, showcasing orchids, roses, topiary and tropical plants. More than 1,200 guests—including a significant number of A-listers—dined on a buffet including black truffle Caesar salad, seared miso scallion chicken, branzino and veggie tagine—plus a vast display of desserts, some topped with gold detailing.

Angel City Designs produced and designed NBCUniversal’s annual rooftop party at the Hilton, working with NBC’s Francine Spray, Universal’s Hollace Davids, and E!’s Wendy Schellinger. Among the architectural elements in the Moroccan-style space was a custom-built, sunken water feature as the centerpiece of a raised lounge area. The fountain had a faux Moroccan tile bottom with two water sprayers, all accented with white floral petals. Under pierced metal chandeliers, long communal tables dotted with candlelight were the focus in the middle of the room.

For InStyle’s buzzy annual party with Warner Brothers, Thomas Ford of Tom Ford Designs constructed a tent that completely covered the Beverly Hilton fountain, taking over the hotel’s Oasis Courtyard and turning the venue into a modern and sophisticated space filled with bold colors. The focal point of the party space was a center light installation, a modern take on a deconstructed lantern. The setting included a variety of materials including silk, gold leather, brass and glossy lacquer, while mirrored surfaces added to the party's play on texture.
