NEW YORK—Food rescue organization City Harvest once again hosted its marquee tasting event, BID, on Oct. 29 at The Glasshouse in Manhattan. The organization welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the signature tasting event to raise money to help feed New Yorkers in need.
The evening brought together more than 50 of New York City’s top chefs, restaurants, and mixologists including Geoffrey Zakarian, Eric Ripert, Marc Forgione, COTE Korean Steakhouse, Rao’s, Nami Nori, and more. Guests were transported back to the era of ‘80s music videos with this year’s CHTV! theme—a play on MTV.
“I knew I wanted to do an ‘80s party—the music and the visuals would be amazing—and that time period has such a special place in many of our guests’ lives,” explained Gregory Boroff, City Harvest’s chief external relations officer. “We always think about On the Move Entertainment’s musical performances first, so we naturally gravitated to a focus on music videos and musical artists of the time.”
To bring the theme to life, the walls were plastered with imagery from the decade such as photos of Prince, Garbage Pail Kids, and Alf. The photo booth, conceptualized by Ed Libby & Company Events and executed by Creative Games, resembled an oversize vintage TV where guests looked like they were appearing on the screen as they posed.
The backdrop behind the chef’s stations were panels with ‘80s-themed imagery—think geometric patterns in bright colors. The chefs themselves were also inspired to dust off references to the decade. Mexology’s station included accessories like throwback sunglasses and neon bracelets and Union Square Cafe’s dish was named “We Got the Beet and Steak Tartare.”
VIP guests enjoyed an exclusive area with “double stations” featuring some of the city’s best sister restaurants, including Don Angie and San Sabino and COQODAQ and COTE, as well as a caviar station by Black Diamond Caviar.
“We wanted to make sure the VIP room felt really special,” Boroff said. “The entrance to the room was a tunnel with neon lighting topped with a Club CHTV sign—it felt like you were heading to an ‘80s nightclub. Inside the VIP room, there were chandelier installations made of colorful Slinkys, a dramatic ice sculpture with a CHTV! logo, one bar with a mirrored angular front, and another bar designed to look like a boom box.”
