As usual, this year’s Chef’s Night Out event hosted by Bon Appetit magazine the night before the James Beard awards was packed to capacity. We arrived at the Gansevoort Hotel’s Japanese restaurant, Ono, promptly at the event’s 9:30 PM call time, and already had to join a line around the block. But evidently we felt much less put-upon than Drew Nieporent, who walked the length of the queue offering $50 to whoever would let him cut in. Wait time notwithstanding, Ono’s heated garden and soaring inside spaces made an elegant venue for the fete, underwritten by beverage sponsors Grey Goose, Evian, and Stella.
