Gourmet food purveyor Chef's Warehouse hosted a James Beard awards preparty Sunday inside Vento's lovely wedge-shaped upstairs event space, which offered wraparound windows and views of the surrounding meatpacking district at sunset. (Ono, the site of Bon Appetit's Chefs' Night Out party later that night, was less than a block away.) An antipasti buffet using Chef's Warehouse products included a variety of salamis, prosciutto, black chickpea salad, and marinated artichokes. But our favorites were the crab insalata with lemon oil and cucumber, and white shrimp with rosemary and orange extra virgin olive oil hors d'oeuvres.
Chef's Warehouse director of PR Jane Walsh planned the event, and she should know about Beard parties: she used to work at M. Young Communications, the company that has planned the massive awards ceremony at the Marriott Marquis since its inception.
