June 9, 2014: Six Cities Bid for Democratic National Convention, Big Wedding Cakes Are Back, Subway Strike Threatens World Cup

1. SIX CITIES BID FOR DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION: Six cities are competing to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention: Birmingham, Alabama; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Philadelphia; Phoenix; and New York, which would hold the event in Brooklyn. CNN: “A technical advisory committee will evaluate the cities over the coming months, including site visits and ‘other inquiries.’ The DNC said it will announce its decision later this year or in early 2015.” http://cnn.it/SH6R1M

2. BIG WEDDING CAKES ARE BACK: Couples who once saw the wedding cake as a place to save on their budget are now returning to over-the-top designs that can reach as much as $20 a slice. The New York Times: “Image-sharing on Pinterest as well as bake-offs on the Food Network have created a new wedding-cake world of aficionados. No longer can professional cake designers get away with offering a few formulaic designs. ‘Every bride is now online, and exposed to a whole world of ideas,’ said Harriette Rose Katz, a Manhattan-based wedding planner who does 130 events a year.” http://nyti.ms/1xsLvW8

3. SUBWAY STRIKE THREATENS WORLD CUP: Just days before the first FIFA World Cup match, subway workers voted to continue their strike in a bid to get higher wages. Bloomberg: “In the past month, professions from teachers to police officers have walked off the job as Brazil prepares to host the most-watched sports event. Protests have coincided with a drop in support for President Dilma Rousseff, who has confronted criticism over World Cup expenditures and delays in related infrastructure projects. … About 60 percent of Brazilians oppose hosting the World Cup because it diverts away from public services, according to a Pew Research survey.” http://bloom.bg/1hJq12J
