1. TED EVENT FOR WOMEN KICKS OUT MOM WITH INFANT: A woman who brought her 5-month-old son to the TEDWomen conference in Monterey, California, was told she had to leave because the conference has a policy banning children. Mashable: “TED does not permit children at any of its conferences and does not coordinate onsite childcare. The policy, however, raises questions about how the event series can fully encourage the participation of mothers who cannot or do not want to arrange childcare accommodations offsite or would prefer not to deal with the logistical hassle of pumping. … [June Cohen, executive producer of TED Media] said that attendees sporadically make childcare and pumping requests, but that revising the no-child rule might help more mothers participate in the conference.”
2. MUSIC FESTIVAL UNVEILS LINEUP WITH UNEXPECTED GUEST STAR: Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest unveiled its lineup with a teaser video featuring Bill Nye the Science Guy, who “scientifically” demonstrated just how fun the fest is. Rolling Stone: “With a dozen tacos on his table and equations on the chalkboard behind him, Nye offers hypotheses about the "Quantitative Fun Observation" graph, which he says goes off the charts due to "D’Angelo's abs, a wrestling ring, the Supercollider Skate Ramp, official makeout zones, a chance of Rae Sremmurd [and] the 'fun fun' funnel cakes." He also has a Venn diagram about tacos and convenience, a Wu-Tang Clan–themed periodic table and names of other festivals that are made to look less fun.” http://rol.st/1dzJWjR
3. HIGH DEMAND FOR POPE’S VISIT TO WASHINGTON: Americans eager to see Pope Francis when he visits Washington this fall are angling to get tickets, making it one of the most coveted tickets in town. Washington Post: “Tickets to the pope’s addresses — he’s leading an open-air mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Sept. 22, then addressing a joint session of Congress the following day — are already in demand, and they’re not even available yet. …The church hasn’t announced its own plan for the historic event, much less how it will distribute the sought-after spots.” http://wapo.st/1HRaABy
