On Wednesday, Gordon Mackie—of SIR Corporation’s Far Niente and Petit Four—opened a sleek new Bay Street restaurant where everything on the menu is fewer than 650 calories. Four, named for the four seasons, is located on the concourse level in Commerce Court South, next door to Petit Four. The venue is decorated in a neutral palette of charcoal grey, chocolate brown, and black. Natural elements such as wood and stone mix with glass and stainless-steel accents.
A granite wall with flowing images on four screens set behind smoked glass provides a focal point, while a rippled wood slat ceiling defines the space above the large uplit glass-topped bar; black leather stools provide seating. Oblong vases, each one holding a single flower and a betta fish, are nestled among the pebbles laid beneath the bar’s glass countertop. The dishes on the menu—which will change with the seasons—include scallop ceviche, smoked sable fish, buckwheat noodles, spelt pasta, and a bison burger sandwich. All of the desserts are fewer than 200 calories per serving, including banana pecan caramel, carrot cake, tiramisu, and raspberry cheesecake.
According to SIR Corporation C.E.O. Peter Fowler, the restaurant redefines the meaning of indulgence. “I believe there is a perception that calorie-reduced food is less than satisfying, particularly when it comes to taste,” he said. “With Four, we wanted to raise those expectations, to develop an atmosphere that is sexy, compelling, and upbeat, but with a healthy menu that is as interesting and delicious as any top restaurant.”
Four holds 176 people, including 27 at the bar. There are no private rooms, but the entire venue is available for bookings. Four is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday. Catering is available.
