Barbecue joints are springing up throughout Chicago. Here are two spots that host private, sauce-smothered dinners for groups.
1. Lillie's Q opened in Wicker Park in July. Chef Charlie McKenna, formerly of Tru and Avenues, named the 65-seat spot after his grandmother Lillie, who taught him how to cook. Available for buyout, the venue can host receptions for 100. Decor includes light fixtures made out of meat hooks, subway-tiled walls and tables made from reclaimed farmhouse wood. For events, McKenna can prepare buffet stations, plated dinners, or passed appetizers. Menu selections include babyback ribs smoked over peach wood, cornbread with honey butter, and barbecued shrimp and grits. Some three 42-inch flatscreen TVs connect to DVD players, and the sound system has an iPod connector.
2. Chicago Q opened in the Gold Coast in October. Chef LeeAnn Whippen of the Learning Channel show Barbecue Pitmasters oversees the menu. Items include kobe brisket prepared in wood-burning smokers, buttermilk mashed potatoes, and bacon-cheddar hush puppies. Two private dining rooms are available: the Wine room seats 30, and the Octogon room seats 12. The venue also offers pick-up catering.
