March 18, 2016: Comic-Con Spins off Standalone Video Channel, Hershey’s Invites SXSW Attendees to Swap Swag, CFDA Fashion Awards to Air on Television for First Time

1. COMIC-CON SPINS OFF STANDALONE VIDEO CHANNEL: In a new outgrowth of the popularity of Comic-Con International, the event organizers are working with Lionsgate to launch a video service in May. The New York Times: “The new, year-round service will be called ‘Comic-Con HQ,’ the companies said in a statement. The beta version will become a paid subscription service in June, in advance of this year’s convention in San Diego, which will run from July 21 through July 24. … Other programming will include entertainment news, convention event coverage, and both films and television series licensed from various distributors.” http://nyti.ms/1UlOtsu

2. HERSHEY’S INVITES SXSW ATTENDEES TO SWAP SWAG: Guests of any conference pick up loads of swag—some they want and some destined for the trash. As part of its efforts to relaunch the Take 5 candy bar, Hershey’s asked South by Southwest attendees to swap unwanted swag for things they want, with the leftover goods going to charity. Adweek: “SXSW attendees were able to swap branded merchandise for things they might actually want like ponchos (it rained the first few days of SXSW), flasks, portable iPhone projectors, reservations at impossible-to-reserve restaurants, and a $250 gift card for a meal. Plus, the Swag Exchange had its own algorithm and functioned as if it were a SXSW stock exchange, applying value to items based on supply and demand, according to [creative agency] Barkley.” http://bit.ly/1UlPlNQ

3. C.F.D.A. FASHION AWARDS TO AIR ON TELEVISION FOR FIRST TIME: The Weinstein Company will produce the first television broadcast of the C.F.D.A. Fashion Awards. The live telecast will include red-carpet coverage as well as the awards themselves; the broadcasting partner has not been named. The event will take place in New York in June. Variety: “The C.F.D.A. board of directors agreed that it was time to further elevate the C.F.D.A. Fashion Awards and bring them to the wider audience on television,” Steven Kolb, president and CEO of the C.F.D.A., said in a statement. “By partnering with the Weinstein Company, we can make this a reality while also furthering the C.F.D.A. mission to strengthen the impact of American Fashion worldwide.” http://bit.ly/1MrfV0b
