Before the award season kicked into high gear and shifted to the West Coast, film types headed to Cipriani 42nd Street for the National Board of Review gala. (The New York Film Critics Circle named its winners last Sunday at the Supper Club.)The nonprofit NBR showcased a simple and cost-effective way to tackle centerpieces, a tradition that Carol Rapoport, the managing director of the National Board of Review, instituted years ago. Stacked in the middle of each dinner table, DVDs, CDs, and screenplays donated by studios took the place of flowers and gave guests the opportunity to sort through the titles and take what they wanted. Films like the Fritz Lang classic Metropolis were among the pickings this year, as well as Superman Returns, along with screenplays from Little Miss Sunshine, Thank You for Smoking, and Stranger Than Fiction.
Annie Schulhof, president of the NBR board of directors, oversaw the gala and worked with John Gallagher of Angel Baby Entertainment, who handled production. Bulgari’s Rory Hermelee, director of external relations, also had a hand in the event; the luxury brand was the sponsor for the evening and displayed seven vitrines of its sparkling jewels and provided more traditional gifts bags that included the company’s fragrances.
