Gen Art Throws Latin-centric Multimedia Bash

The arts org decked the Henry Fonda Theater in beachy decor, and brought in capoeira dancers and Afro-Cuban and Latin music to give guests a thoroughly diverse sensory experience.

August 24, 2006
It's not everyday Brazilian dancers, blackjack tables, short film screenings, massage stations, and frozen custard all turn up in one place. But Gen Art's "Ignite! A Multimedia Extravaganza" event offered an uncommon sensory hodgepodge. "This event is especially good because it helps cross-pollinate the audience," said Ian Gerard, C.E.O. of the organization, which is dedicated to showcasing fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians, and visual artists to twenty- and thirtysomethings. "It takes a lot of the different areas we work in and combines them into one event."For the bash, Gen Art took over Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood. Dubbed an "Evening of Palms and Pearls," the night had a beachy, Latin American feel both indoors and out. A shirtless young man on a lifeguard stand greeted guests, handing out strings of faux pearls. Sand-colored Astroturf covered the ground, and white leather couches, brightly colored silk-covered ottomans, and glass cocktail tables served as makeshift lounges for guests to sip beer and cocktails or cool down with frozen custard cones from Lickety Split.

"You walk in and you're transported to the beach. You're on holiday. The event lends itself to a sensual, experiential overload," said Jennifer Egan, Gen Art's director for Los Angeles. "Ultimately it gives the artists a chance to interact and connect with the consumer."

In the main room, a palm tree stood smack in the middle of the dance floor, surrounded by cream suede benches. DJ Michelle Pesce spun Latin beats up in the balcony between acts, which included Capoeira Brasil Dancers and Afro-Cuban/Latin soul band Sono-Lux. Upstairs, orange and red lightbulbs hung from the rooftop and guests relaxed in tented lounges while models danced in a shallow wading pool, showing off Ashley Paige knit swimwear and Christie Martin accessories. Nearby, a display showcased artist Chase's spray-paint-on-canvas works, and a separate room allowed movie buffs to grab a seat and watch a rotating lineup of short films. Promoting their new partnership, Bliss Spa and JetBlue set up a "Ready, Jet, Slow" lounge on the roof.
